LATEST NEWS Sam’s new album,’Shackles Off’ is due out
at the end of this year. Skip
McDonald (Miles Davis, Sinead
O’Connor, Little Axe, Sugar Hill Gang) is producer and guitarist. Keith le Blanc(Madonna,
Annie Lenox) has just been recorded on drums. Crispy Horns on brass. So far Sam has
enjoyed every second of producing this album as all the musicians have been
amazing to work with and really good people. Sam anticipates it to be the
pinnacle of her recording career so far. It is called ‘Shackles
Off’ as it is a break away from trying to make music that will be
‘commercial’ but more to have musical freedom, regardless of whether
it is ‘commercial’ or not. Also it is Sam exploring her wide
musical and lyrical styles, finding freedom after a long period of being tied
to a record deal. The whole point of the album is to spread peace, love and unity. There are
political and controversial songs on this album which no doubt may not get
played on commercial stations but the rebels out there (who want a fair world) will appreciate
them. It will be released on her own label,
FLY FREE RECORDS and on the
internet as downloads. To find out when the album is released please join the
mailing list. Sam is also playing with
Dave Buckingham an
amazing flamenco guitarist and tunes will get released when they are finished!!! HARD DRIVING – ALBUM OF THE MONTH – LINK MAGASINE “This 8 track album by Sam Payne is stripped down stuff - Sam plays piano and sings - no frills. She has her own voice and plays piano with fire, brimstone, light and shade. She seems to take inspiration from the early pioneers Albert Ammons and Pinetop Perkins via relatively recent innovators such as Mac Rebenack to create a very personal style. The straight ahead boogie of “45 in My Hand” to the backbeat of “Dodge it and Scarper”, the Ketty Lester style blues of “Bad Luck Blues”, the Cotton Club style of “Set You Up”, the classic High Heel Sneekers riff of “Glutton for Punishment”, Sam plays with a driving left hand and rare rhythmic sense. Combined with a no nonsense sultriness to her voice and this album is really memorable” HARD DRIVING- Blues In “In Sam Payne we have a chance to prove our daring curiosity. Not that we are given long to contemplate defying convention. (Probably a good thing – hersy is easier when instinctive). Hard Driving maybe short but its not slight. Indeed, it is the brevity that give is sharpness. The release is well named. For description of the ivory tinkling I can think of nothing more accurate than the title. It has a pure yet lilting quality akin to the feeling of riding the crest of a good drink. Payne’s voice, meanwhile, is as smoky as a jazz club at closing time and as full bodied as a Rubens muse. This is a composition of simplicity. There is one performer, her voice and her piano. That’s it. Anything more would be superfluity. Instead, there is purity, purity so compelling it might just force Jool’s into the slow lane”. Jonathan Blackstaffe. Over the past year Sam has produced 3 solo CD’s. “Fly” which is a mixture of original songs and blues/jazz/boogie. “Shades of Blue” which was recorded on a grand piano and is jazzy/blues/boogie and “Hard Driving” which is RnB, blues and boogie. Each Cd contains material that Sam has written herself, no covers. Sam enjoyed an extensive recording repertoire whilst at Hotshot Records but sadly due to legal reasons the 4 albums she produced, with bands, are not available. “Shades of Blue” , “Fly” and “Hard Driving” are available as CD’s from CD Baby. Tower Records and as downloads from Yahoo and itunes. |
